What’s easy to make, budget-friendly, funny, and PRACTICAL? This hand-painted doormat!
As a clean freak it can be really hard living in New York sometimes. “Did they just sit on my couch with subway pants? What if someone stepped in some *bleep* with the shoes they’re walking on my floors with? (I have a no shoes policy enforced most of the time)” You get my drift. For my sanity I try my best to keep the outside, out, and this doormat is a great way to do that. I got the idea scrolling on Etsy for home decor and seeing so many doormats with funny quotes. Me being me, I just knew I had to make one instead of buying it – plus making it yourself means you could make it with your own unique quote!
What you’ll need:
The how-to:
step one: Lay out your mat and use chalk to sketch an outline of the word/phrase you want on it (Stuck on ideas for a phrase? Pinterest has so many!)
step two: Using your paintbrush, carefully paint out your phrase with outdoor paint, making sure to cover the chalk outline
step three: Let mat dry for about 2 hours
Optional: Use a sealant spray to secure the design if you believe your mat will be exposed to lots of bad weather or will get a lot of use
I love love love how this turned out! Painting on such rough texture was difficult at first for me, but once I got a hang it was smooth sailing. If you find that your mat feels too rough to paint on, “dab” the paint into the outline gently, instead of using brush strokes. That way you can get more paint onto the mat. But don’t let the texture deter you from making something really cool. I can’t wait to see all the quotes you guys come up with for yours — I might just have to give the best one a prize.
