Straw Bag Makeover with Pom Poms

The second it got warmer this year, I dusted off my straw bag and took it for a spin. Straw bags became a trend more than a year ago and have since been relentless – I’ve pretty much seen everyone with some kind of straw bag on their arm, from your fave influencer to my mom.

There are so many styles that the possibilities are endless. Still, it’s not easy to stand out from the crowd when all the other girls have a bag like yours. I took this as an excuse to add a personal touch to my straw bags with you guessed it… pom poms.

I came a long way to settle on pom poms as my straw bag upgrade DIY because I’ve seen some bags like this already. But there’s nothing quite like making something yourself and getting to show it off. Besides, I made raffia pom pops which are WAY cooler than yarn ones. I know you also want to put your personal flair on your straw bag, so read on for the deets!

What you’ll need:

  • Straw bag (surprisingly, there are a lot on Amazon where I got mine from and the prices aren’t too bad. See here, here and here)
  • Pearlized raffia ribbon (I’ve been obsessed with red hues lately so I got this burgundy one from Amazon)
  • Pom pom maker (if you don’t have one, learn how to make pom poms easily with a fork here)
  • Glue

The how-to:

step one: Using your raffia ribbon, make 3 pom poms with your pom pom maker or a fork (here’s the fork tutorial again!)

step two: Take a very long piece of raffia ribbon and double it up

step three: Sketch the word of your choice on the straw bag using a pencil

step four: Follow along the lines of your sketched word, glue the ribbon down to spell out your word.

step five: Glue your pom poms on the straw bag and let everything air dry

This takes very little work! Well, once you’re done making your pom poms. You’ll have a good amount of raffia ribbon left over – I know I did – so I have a few other DIYs in the works to make use of the rest of the ribbon, so stay tuned! You can also make pom poms for key chains, shoes, accessories, and much more.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! If you’re feeling very crafty, this jeans upgrade will go very well with your new bag.

P.s. if you took a shot each time I mention ‘pom poms’ in my post, tomorrow morning would be very rough for you!
